Description
A series of side tables of varying tones and combinations, with hand-turned, solid oak tops which allow the timber to take centre stage. Floats are made in three sections and held together with a patinated brass disc at the top. The table bases are either turned in solid oak with black lines at its waist and foot, or hand stained with a matt finish.

Materials and finishes
Solid European oak
European oak is a slow growing hardwood native tree to Europe. It has a golden to light brown colouring with a variety of grain patterns. Oak is very hard, durable wood and gets darker and richer with age.
Finish - White oil. We use a slightly white pigmented satin hard-wax oil that slows the darkening of the timber.
As a natural material, each piece of timber is unique and variations in colour and grain will occur. This is especially prevalent in end-grain where the capillaries of the wood are exposed.
Black stained poplar
Oak and black Float tables are hand finished in our London studio using an oil-based black stain which allows the grain of the wood to shine through. We finish it with a protective clear oil to allow the timber to withstand daily spillage.
Painted poplar
Coloured Float bases are hand painted in our London studio in a wood and metal paint that obscures the wood grain leaving a consistent, flawless finish that contrasts with the more organic oiled oak top. All of our Float colours are custom mixed exclusively for PINCH.

Oiled wood
An oiled finish is a durable natural looking finish that can be revitalised (and if necessary, more easily repaired). Oiled finishes require some low level maintenance to keep the wood protected and looking its best.
Day to day cleaning:
• Wipe clean with a damp non-abrasive cloth, then using a dry cloth remove any excess moisture.
• Wipe up wine, oil and any liquids that might stain as quickly as possible.
• To ensure the finish remains as resilient as possible to staining we recommend Osmo Wash & Care (8016) as it contains soaps and oils to both nourish and prevent the wood from drying out.
6 monthly replenishment / more stubborn stains:
• As the piece is used it can dry out as the oil can thin with wear and washing with water alone. If the table looks dry or you have a more stubborn stain we recommend using a revitalising Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner (white 3087) for oak pieces and (clear 3029) for walnut pieces
Do not:
• Leave any water, wine, oil or liquids that might stain – wipe up as quickly as possible. (Oil provides a semi-permeable finish, which means some liquids can penetrate the surface if left).
• Use any chemical cleaning products or bleach as this will remove the protective layer of oil and it will then stain.

Lobster buoys
Lobster and crab fishing buoys spotted in Devon provided us with inspiration, as colour and shape starting points for a side table design.
Bringing life to an idea
In our design studio, sketches move quickly to experimentation in 1:5 balsa models. We turn multiple versions in our model making workshop, as forms start to take shape. We play. Single routes begin to sing.
Follow the concept through
The simplicity of the original idea belies the complexity of the making involved in our Float table. It was important to see the oak’s cross grain on the top of the table, to celebrate the dimensionality this brings to a flat timber surface.
The quality of the materials and craft must be high to manage the perils of cross grain production. The solidity of the top contrasts with the smooth perfection of the stained base, a demanding aspect of production, particularly at the line where the 2 sections meet.
The workshop in Gloucestershire turns a Float table in 3 parts. They are hand stained and finished in our studio, and tethered together with patinated brass dials and rods.
