Materials and finishes
Black American walnut
Black American walnut is a slow growing deciduous tree native to north America and Canada. It is a hardwood prized for its dark brown, purplish hue with a sometimes swirling grain, it can display many unique characteristics, such as knots and variations in depth of tone. Walnut will get lighter with age becoming more honeyed over time. We use a protective clear oil finish which enables the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.
Finish- clear oil. We use a clear satin hard-wax oil that enriches the colour of the timber.
European oak
European oak is a slow growing hardwood native tree to Europe. It has a golden to light brown colouring with a variety of grain patterns. Oak is very hard, durable wood and gets darker and richer with age. We use a protective white oil finish to allow the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.
European oak can display a variety of characteristics from straight grain to large swirling crown cut grain Medullary rays, small 'Cats paw' knots all of which are an intrinsic and natural part of the grain pattern.
Finish - white oil. We use a slightly white pigmented satin hard-wax oil that slows the darkening of the timber.

Customise this design
This design can be made special order as a custom piece. As such we can vary the width and length dimensions to suit non-standard mattresses whilst always ensuring the core of the design is respected.

The starting point
In our studio we seek to design and make pieces of furniture that extend a warm invitation, but also feel considered and rigorously detailed. We design so that our furniture will always convey a lightness of touch - an effortlessness that equates to a relaxed but intentional environment. An upholstered, posted bed has a historical birthright, and ours is brought right up to date with a fully considered silhouette that allows for balance and poise, confidence and softness.
Russell starts with various sketched forms and principles, moving quickly to full size drawings to explore curve and flow. We then turn the shape full size in our prototyping workshop, allowing us to refine and refine, back and forth, from drawing to lathe, until we reach a profile we feel is perfected.
Hand turned
Our final bed posts are made in Gloucestershire in a dedicated turning workshop where micrometers are respected. We make our posts from single-length sections of character European oak to produce the voluptuous curves, tapers and sharp detail lines that give the Olivine bed posts their appealing form.

Upholstered in Norfolk
The Olivine bed is upholstered in an east of England workshop, by a small skilled team. These are makers that know our pieces inside out, and care where their productions go on to live. There is such an art to upholstering across many shapes, and in a variety of fabrics - knowing how much or how little to stretch and place pattern to get the perfect curve or radius, delivered to our exacting standards.
