Description

Inspired by the candle sconces historically seen lining a monastery cloister, the Posent is a sculpted wall light that combines the beauty of brown oak with hand-blown glass. Its turned timber dish holds a warm-toned glass sphere, created by layering two different colours to give a mottled effect. The light stems from a circular bronze fixture, which can be oriented to face upwards or down.

Simplicity at its finest

Drawing from the minimalism of Cistercian monasteries, the Posent light design interprets the simplicity of their candle-lined corridors as inspiration for its sculpted form. Starting with a sketch, Posent was drawn with clean, curved lines to create its refined ball-in-bowl composition.

Moments of material process, preserved in time

An exhibition of beautiful materiality, the Posent light demonstrates an intense dedication to craft and highlights moments of material process paused forever in time. Its final form came to be by juxtaposing two contrasting materials, pairing the warmth and strength of solid timber with the fragility and reflective nature of glass.

The choreography of glassblowing

Posent’s spherical shade is made at a specialist London glassblowing workshop. Coloured glass is heated on the end of a blowing iron and covered in several layers of clear glass gathered from the furnace. The molten glass is shaped and blown into a ball in layers, with each section rolled in powdered coloured glass to add tint and texture, before being placed into an annealing oven to cool. The result is an inner mottled texture that captures the movement of glassblowing frozen in time.

Finding the beauty in nature’s imperfections

Turned from brown oak, Posent’s timber dish is made from an oak tree that has been naturally coloured by the fungus Fistulina Hepatica. A remarkable and rare natural occurrence that penetrates the internal body of the tree, once cut and dried, it dies off and leaves a preserved perspective of the internal process. Carefully selected for its lively grain, the section of brown oak is then turned at a specialist workshop to form its distinct dish shape.
