Materials and finishes
European oak
European oak is a slow growing hardwood native tree to Europe. It has a golden to light brown colouring with a variety of grain patterns. Oak is very hard, durable wood and gets darker and richer with age. We use a protective white oil finish to allow the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.
European oak can display a variety of characteristics from straight grain to large swirling crown cut grain Medullary rays, small 'Cats paw' knots all of which are an intrinsic and natural part of the grain pattern.
Black American walnut
Black American walnut is a slow growing deciduous tree native to north America and Canada. It is a hardwood prized for its dark brown, purplish hue with a sometimes swirling grain, it can display many unique characteristics, such as knots and variations in depth of tone. Walnut will get lighter with age becoming more honeyed over time. We use a protective lacquer finish which enables the timber to age gracefully without heavy discolouration and withstand daily spillage.
Coloured lacquer
The exterior is sprayed with a satin Polyurethane lacquer which is far more durable than a standard paint. We have a choice of house lacquer colours, or the lacquer can be matched to a custom colour reference.
Measuring for access
Measuring access for delivery
To help you make sure the piece you are ordering from us can be delivered safely into the space it will finally live, we have created the following document of what to consider.
If you do not feel confident in measuring your space for access - we would recommend having one of our delivery professionals perform an access check (where available). Please contact our team for more information.
Planning your delivery
When you place your order, please notify our team of any special requirements, such as the need for small trucks to navigate narrow roads and driveways, restricted delivery time frames, gated entry access, multiple flights of stairs or service elevator reservations.
Confirm all product dimensions
Our website provides width, depth and height for every piece of furniture.
Furniture width must be less than the height of any doorway, stairway or hallway that the item will need to pass through. Furniture depth must be less than the width of any relevant doorway, stairway or hallway.
Many pieces have detachable legs or in some cases detachable arms or bases etc to aid access, this information can be found on our website or on specification sheets.
How we measure furniture
Furniture is measured at the tallest, deepest and widest points of the product, including overhangs, angles, outward curves and arms.
Measuring the space where your furniture will live
Once you have decided where you intend to place your furniture check the width, depth and height of the item on our website, and make sure it will fit in the space you’ve chosen. Consider marking out the width and depth of your furniture on the floor with masking tape.
Measuring the path for delivery
Determine the best pathway from outside your home to the room where your furniture will be placed. Measure every doorway, elevator, staircase and hallway that the item will pass through. For apartment buildings or homes with elevators, it is important to measure the elevator interior height, elevator opening and distance to the opposite wall. Always measure entry clearances – the distance between the doorway and the opposite wall – in the event that the furniture needs to turn a corner. Compare these measurements to the dimensions of your new furniture to ensure that our delivery professionals can navigate through entryways and around obstacles such as radiators.
It is your responsibility to ensure that all furniture items will fit through any access points such as doorways, stairways, hallways, elevators and around corners into the desired location.
Note that our delivery professionals are not permitted to move furniture currently in your home, nor are they allowed to move or set up electrical equipment or remove doors from hinges! Before our delivery team arrives, please prepare your home:
• Clear a path, moving any furniture or artwork that’s in the way
• Secure low-hanging light fixtures
• Set rugs in place
• Confine pets to another room
Thank you for your help
Again, if you do not feel confident in measuring your space for access - we would recommend having one our delivery professionals perform an access check (where available). Please contact our team for more information.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I purchase this piece?
Please click the "Make an enquiry" button and fill out the form that appears. A member of our team will reach out with a quote including shipping to your location.
How is this piece delivered?
This piece requires assembly. It is delivered as five main elements - two halves of the carcass, a base and two doors. Shelves, drawers and any internal fittings will be separately packed and can be fitted when the piece is fully assembled.
What is the warranty on this piece?
This piece has a warranty of 24 months.
Will the timber change colour?
Yes, all timbers change with time. Different timbers react in different ways to UV and on different time scales. We recommend keeping all pieces out of direct sunlight to prevent light damage, however there is UV all around our homes and pieces will change. Oak tends to slowly get darker with age, we use a small amount of white oil in our finish to further slow down this process. Walnut gets lighter and more honeyed with age. This can happen relatively quickly depending on how much sunlight the piece gets. We suggest moving objects around on the surface of walnut so no shadowing from light damage occurs.
Can I customise the interior?
Our armoires have a "bird beak" system - a simple adjustable way of using a choice of hanging rails, shelves and drawers to customise the interior to work as you want it. Additionally, shelves and hanging rails are adjustable after installation so you can continue to change the layout as your needs require. Additional shelves and hanging rails can be purchased later on if required.
Can I customise this piece?
We offer customisations of this piece regarding size and materials. All customisations must respect the integrity of the original design. Please contact our sales team with your request.
Where is the European oak from?
The majority of our European oak is from France though we source oak from FSC certified forestries across mainland Europe.
Is the timber responsibly sourced?
All of the timber that we use comes from sustainable sources with certification from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). As the pioneer of forest certification, the FSC sets the standard for responsible forest stewardship that is environmentally appropriate and socially beneficial.
Care guide
Avoid placing any furniture in direct sunlight or next to strong heat sources.
Lacquered wood
A lacquered finish requires very little maintenance and is durable and resistant to spills.
Day to day cleaning:
-
Wipe clean with a damp cloth then buff off with a clean, dry cloth.
Do not:
-
Leave any wine, oil or liquids that might stain - wipe up as quickly as possible.
-
Use any abrasive cleaning products or bleach as this could damage the protective layer of lacquer.
Oiled wood
An oiled finish is a durable natural looking finish that can be revitalised (and if necessary, more easily repaired). Oiled finishes require some low level maintenance to keep the wood protected and looking its best.
Day to day cleaning:
-
Wipe clean with a damp non-abrasive cloth, then using a dry cloth remove any excess moisture.
-
Wipe up wine, oil and any liquids that might stain as quickly as possible.
-
To ensure the finish remains as resilient as possible to staining we recommend Osmo Wash & Care (8016) as it contains soaps and oils to both nourish and prevent the wood from drying out.
6 monthly replenishment / more stubborn stains:
-
As the table is used it can dry out as the oil can thin with wear and washing with even water. If the table looks dry or you have a more stubborn stain we recommend using a revitalising Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner (white 3087) for oak pieces and (clear 3029) for walnut pieces.
Do not:
-
Leave any water, wine, oil or liquids that might stain - wipe up as quickly as possible. (Oil provides a semi-permeable finish, which means some liquids can penetrate the surface if left).
-
Use ANY chemical cleaning products or bleach as this will remove the protective layer of oil and it will then stain.

Inspiration in art
A good few years ago, walking past a gallery in London, we were struck by a Ben Nicholson relief artwork that we spotted through the window. It was layered and engaging, yet it evoked a feeling of total stillness. This moment stuck with us and we went home with the goal of recreating its impact in a piece of furniture.
Bringing life to an idea
Taking inspiration from this artwork, we began building a layered card model, painted in a plaster paint that would become the cabinet's facade. The shape and size of each rectangle is carefully considered to have a balanced group of shapes that look random in their alignment. They exist in four levels and are designed to not allow the same height panel to intersect with one another. The overall effect is a gentle yet engaging relief where the perceived simplicity belies the complexity involved to achieve a piece of this quality.
Our Alba series is made in Essex. These makers take a huge pride in what they make for us. In our work the human hand is present from the crafting of the original model, through to the final sand and carefully applied lacquer finish.
The Alba series can be finished in any of our house lacquers - it lends well to Agi, a warm off-white with a slight hint of red that best reflects our initial plaster concept but the Alba design is versatile and takes well to a range of shades. If you can't find the colour for you amongst our house options we also offer a custom lacquer service so there is endless opportunity for the perfect match.
