How we work

Designed by Russell, our collection comprises many forms, spoken through a singular voice. Even in its most simplest expression, there is a signature handwriting that tells the story of each piece. Each generous, empathetic and forgiving, each a statement of intent.

A world of inspiration

Inspiration can strike at any moment, and Russell and Oona keep their imaginations fueled with art, travel and the beauty of new landscapes. They collect references from each destination they visit, informed by the feeling of a place. This blend of cultural sensibilities is prevalent in our collection: the craftsmanship of American Shaker, the simplicity of Scandinavian Modernism, and the rigour of classic British design.

A partnership for life

A sacred dance, the way Russell and Oona collaborate has been perfected over two decades. Oona observes and distils, taking in her environment. Russell absorbs and listens, gathering ideas from the everyday. Together they move in harmony, to a rhythm all of their own. As Russell develops each design, Oona is a sounding board. He dreams up the details of each piece, setting its identity and intention. She sees the potential, how it will be used and the contribution it will make to a space.

It starts with a sketch

Each piece starts its life on the page. Pencils, felt tips, and strewn sheets of sketchbook surround Russell’s desk. It is here he interprets the threads of his imagination into an initial sketch. As each line forms on the paper, details start to gain clarity, with curvature and angles becoming more defined. A sketch might go through several evolutions, with Russell often coming back to half-finished pages at a later date.

Bringing life to ideas

There is a journey to beckon each piece into the physical world. A sketch may set the path, but it is modelmaking that guides the design. With a modelmaker father, Russell grew up around the process, and so it is as intuitive to him as anything else. Made from balsa wood, to 1:5 scale, it is in miniature that Russell can sculpt, carve, amend and refine his vision. No model is ever discarded, and they line the shelves of our studio as an honest reminder of the successes and failures that are inherent to the creative process.

Make it sing

There is an engagement required from Oona and the wider design team as each piece moves towards its final form. Proportions are considered, materials are tested and distinguishing details are debated. Large-scale prototypes and sections of a piece are created using materials most suited to their medium. A cabinet’s exterior facade could be crafted via a cardboard model, a cushioned sofa might be hand-carved with clay, and often our lighting is sculpted from a section of plant fibre patiently waiting to be employed.

Play to their skills

We entrust only the most skilled craftspeople with bringing our designs to life. We seek out specialist workshops for their strengths and begin long-lasting partnerships to make beautiful things together. Drawings are shared, visits are paid, elements are edited, and a commitment is made.
