Pium inspiration sketch by PINCH

Celebrating nature

Patterns and forms found in nature often influence our lighting designs. The shade of the Pium table light is inspired by the rigid repetition of the inner cavities of a seed pod.

This organic influence is carried through from the design phase to material selection. The Pium table light is a celebration of natural materials, this selection pays homage to its inception but also felt like an instinctive reaction to the light’s form. Our aim is to always respond to a product's individual wants, to satisfy its demands: to make it sing.

Beautiful materiality

The shade is made from abaca fibre, a traditional millinery material, originally used in the making of our Anders lighting range. Abaca fibre is derived from the abaca plant, a close relation of the banana. It is one of the world’s strongest natural fibres and is inherently sustainable.

Make it sing

The base of our Pium table light is made from FSC certified European (usually French) oak. This oak has a slight twiginess, which presents as a light scattering of small knots and knot clusters throughout each piece of wood. We carefully select pieces that are "lightly pippied" which add an element of character to each base but are not so abundant that it distracts from the grain of the oak. We feel these markings add interest but equally the timber artfully references the tree’s journey, conveys its maturity and celebrates its wonder.
